Highslide JS

So the Lightweight land Rover was finished in 2014. It looked nice but I wasn't happy. There was a lot of vibration. All of the covers over the seat base and fuel tanks rattled, seemingly along with every other plate in the cab. I tried putting rubber strip under the fuel tank covers but that made no difference. There also seemed to be a rumbling noise associated with movement. I had the front propshaft rebalanced but that made no difference. I put up with it but th noise level seemed to get gradually worse. Things reached a head in 2021 on a trip to Keswick when the rumbling sounded like main bearings giving up. I rang my wife from Dunmail Raise (between Grasmere and Thirlmere where I could get a signal) to tell her that I was likely to be coming home by breakdown truck. I managed to get home OK but was very concerned. I felt that I had better strip down the engine to find out what was going wrong.

Don't think this is a simple engine rebuild - the interesting bit comes at the end!

Highslide JS With my facilities it was going to be much easier with all the front bodywork and seatbase removed. Here we are ready for engine removal. Next job is to move the whole lot side ways so it is under the central hoist.
Highslide JS You can leave the gearbox in place but I decided to get it out.
Highslide JS I lifted the gearbox out and then dropped it onto a solid sheet of plywood.

Highslide JS I've got a solid metal bench which came from a local technical college when they decided that no one needed to learn about engineering any more. So the engine was stripped down on it.
Highslide JS The main bearings looked OK. A small amount of wear but no major damage. The job was starting to puzzle.
Highslide JS The crank was taken down to Lancaster Engineering for them to have a good look at it. In the meantime, everything was cleaned and repainted.
Highslide JS "No fault found" said Lancaster Engineering. They did a balance check with the flywheel bolted on and made some minor adjustments. I asked them to supply replacement main, big end and thrust bearings. Strangely, the main bearings that supplied had the retaining tangs in different positions to mine and I got replacements elsewhere. Possibly they were the ones for a diesel engine? So with the crank back, I started to rebuild the engine.
