Highslide JS 9 December

After another coat of paint on the hubs, I decided to have a go at dismantling the 3 pairs of track rods. 3 of the track rod ends came out without an issue but the other 3...... In the end it was in the vice, apply blowtorch and get hot. Then take stilson wrench and apply brute force. Eventually they all came out.

More painting. First coat of top coat on outside of rear wheel hubs, second coat of topcoat on inside of front wheel hubs. Final coat of topcoat on brake valve so should be able to fit that once the bolt order arrives. Then more wire brushing, first on the track rods (easy) and then on the best of the brake drums. One is definitely scrap (grooves) and one is marginal so these will be replaced. The 2 new ones will go on the front. Here's the before and after. I keep finding small pieces of wire brush in bits of skin - I wear full protective but they still seem to get everywhere.

Wheels down to garage for tyre fitting. Had a go at trying to separate exhaust and inlet manifolds. The exhaust is gone but the inlet looks OK. I've not been very successful so far. Looks like the linking studs are seized.

Not much time tonight so fitted the bearings to one hub. Flexible brake pipes arrived today so those went on. It looks like the brake pipe set has the wrong threads - probably metric when they should be imperial. So I will have to send them back to get the right ones. Bit frustrating when you're given the wrong parts.

Turner Engineering phoned to say that the engine is ready and will be despatched today. I had a good chat with Richard who clearly demonstrated that he knows a lot about Land Rover engines!

I picked up the engine on its return from Turners at the local distribution centre. I wasn't sure how I was going to get it delivered having a gravel front drive (a pain!). Unfortunately, Turners used a different pallet to the one I sent it on and it was slightly longer. It just went into the back of the Land Rover but I had to take the internal rear door cover off before I could close the door. As Turners had laid the engine horizontal on the pallet, I could get it using my engine hoist. Fortunately, the Land Rover just will fit under the garage door.

Once the packaging had been removed, I could lust over a perfectly restored engine. Definitely an immaculate job. I do have one problem as they've fitted the wrong rocker cover - mine has an oil filler hole as well as the breather.

Back to Preston to pick up the body parts. Good job with most of the aluminium in very good nick. The tub has suffered all along the front where it sits on the chassis. This has now gone to a mate in Clapham (Yorks) for some welding work.

Fitted the brake pipes in the morning - the front left pipe was far too long. Then engine in. I dropped the front of the chassis down as low as possible and then moved the engine into position. Here we are ready for final positioning.

New engine mountings were fitted. Much later in this story, you will find out that these were a major problem. The system that worked was that I fitted the front left mounting first and then fitted the front right. The other way round didn't work as the right hand mounting drops down too far in its slot and then prevented the left from engaging. Turner were very swift in sending out a replacement rocker cover

Not much time tonight so I found the flywheel and all the bolts, then fitted the clutch. Here's all the bits ready to go in. I use a socket extension bar to get the clutch plate aligned. I look down the hole to see if the circles are concentric. Should find out soon if I've got it right!

Christmas Day and I was allowed in the garage for a while. Gearbox fitting day. First lift was with the engine crane and I then transferred it to the chain block. Here's the initial attempt at fitting.
