Highslide JS 27 November

A big packet of nuts and bolts arrived so it was time to get the rear axle bolted down. With no load on the springs it goes down a long way; too low to connect the shock absorbers. Jacking up from the bottom of the spring merely had the chassis lifting off the axle stands. How to compress the spring so that I could get the rebound strap in place and the shock absorbers on? This was my solution with a couple of sash cramps. Did the job nicely. Then rear differential in followed by the halfshafts. I'll be trying to get some paint on tomorrow night.

Back late tonight so only enough time to start putting primer on bare metal axle parts.
Highslide JS 30 November

A hard day today. There's so much paint on the body that the only way to get a decent finish is to strip it all down to bare metal. I've found a place in Preston that will do the job so today's target was to get everything in a state where they were ready to go. As I'm going for a smarter look, I've been looking at going for galvanised capping rather than painted as it is now. There's a lot of talk on forums about the cappings being held down by solid rivets. I was pretty relieved when I found that it was all held together by pop rivets. So I start by drilling out the rivets with a slightly oversize drill aiming to break off the heads of the rivets.
Highslide JS Next I go for a slightly undersize drill and drill right the way through. Sometimes you find that the rivet mandrel has got stuck. As its very hard, it can be difficult to drill through. Sometimes you can get round the problem by gripping the back of the rivet with a mole grip (original!) and pulling it out.
Highslide JS A pile of bits is building up ready for paint stripping.

Collected wheels from paint shop - very nice! I'll leave them for a week before fitting the tyres.
  3 December

Axles and swivel housings now have 4 layers of paint so that should stop them rusting for a while. Fitted the rear brake plates to the axles so should be able to start building up the brakes soon. Need to find some brake drum paint.
  3 December

I hired a van to take the bits down to Ribble Technology in Preston. I had to get a luton van as nothing else was wide enough for the tub. That's the last of them for 2 weeks
Highslide JS 7 December

Final coat of paint on the rear wheel hubs. In the afternoon, I fitted the wheel bearings and then fitted the hubs to the stub axles. Ran the brake pipes down the axle; the P clips are stainless. The diff pinion flanges have now been painted and fitted.
Highslide JS 8 December

Wire brushing of driving members and hub caps and then a coat of paint. Brakes shoes fitted to front axle while I paint the hubs.
