Highslide JS 19 November

I'm trying to get hold of a pallet so I can get the engine off for rebuilding. I normally do it myself but I think I want a proper job so I'm looking at Turner Engineering - they specialise in Land Rovers. Might get my hands on a pallet on Thursday. Back home, it was lug the differentials up from the shed to the garage and scrape the old gasket off one of them. Then a coat of black paint. I've got the U-bolts on the front axle. The inner U bolt is getting hard to find on the web but I got one from Blanchards. The inner seems to be UNF, the outer BSF - fortunately I've got both sets of sockets!

As I wanted the bench space and standing the axle vertically is asking for trouble, I decided to hang the rear axle in the check straps. The springs are are on order so the next step should be to get the springs in and the axle mounted. Note that military Land Rovers have the back face of the rear diff painted white so that they are illuminated by the convoy light.

I had a go at fitting the races in the swivel housings. One is in half way - I might see if I can find someone with a press!

Back late tonight so not much chance for anything major. The paint had dried nicely on the differentials so after cleaning off any drips on the joint flange, the front one was fitted. I need to torque it down tomorrow and then finish off painting round the joint. Note the copper grease on all threads.

Applied a small amount of persuasion to the bearing race in the swivel housing and it meekly went into place. I'm not sure about the Railko bush (in the other end) as there's a lot of gloom about them on forums.

Picked up a pallet tonight so I can try to get the engine organised for delivery. I thought I'd have a go at the swivel housing again. The Railko bush went in halfway on the skew and then stuck. I had a go on the housing with the blowtorch and it went in. I think I don't have it in far enough as the movement seems a bit stiff. I might dismantle it again tomorrow and check that the bearings are in tight. The swivel domes are new as the old ones were badly pitted.

Rear springs arrived today. They weren't very well lined up so a little bit of work in the vice got them lined up better. These springs went in much easier than the front springs. Unfortunately the U Bolts are a BSF thread and didn't come with the nuts so they're now on order.

Here's the engine before it went off to Turner Engineering. This is my first attempt at getting it into the back of my other Land Rover - failed miserably. It's basically OK but looks pretty disgusting

Here was the the second attempt at getting the engine into the back of the Land Rover. With my stand on the ground, the jib angle was too steep and I couldn't get it high enough without fouling the engine. This attempt didn't work either - the jib fouled the top of the door and I still couldn't get it high enough. Fortunately, John, our neighbour, came past and came back with his tractor after lunch. With a bale spike on the tractor and the spike through the lifting strops, it went into the back. I've strapped the engine down onto the pallet.

Afternoon was more wire brushing - it's difficult to do it at night. All of the axle and brake gear is now clean ready for painting.

The second swivel housing bearings went in a bit easier. The Railko Bush went into the freezer for a couple of days. I heated up the housing with a blowtorch and then hammered in the bush. I've still got to fit the nearside brake plate but that should be ticked off tomorrow night. Then we'll need a painting session.

I delivered the engine to one of the local delivery companies. The Land Rover went up quite a distance once the forklift had relieved it of the weight. In the evening, I attempted to fit the nearside half shaft but could not get it to engage in the differential. Next time fit the halfshaft before fitting the swivel housing.

A happy evening wire brushing hubs. The bottom flange to the steering relay was bolted in place. I also found the chassis mounted brake shuttle valve and scraped vast quantities of gunge off it.
