  4 November

Not much progress tonight. I started to wire brush the front springs. I was on the second spring when the angle grinder started to cut out and then failed completely. Judging by the way it didn't spin down as quickly as normal, I reckon something serious has happened inside. Time for a new one. The good news today is that Richards Chassis phoned and the chassis will be delivered on Wednesday. Took the wheels down to the local garage to get the tyres off.

The chassis arrives from Richards Chassis. Looks very good. As I couldn't shift it by myself I spent the evening stripping the swivel housings. It does look as if the chrome faces are pitted.

For the build, I'm working in the garage which I hope to keep clean. The garage has an RSJ beam running under the ridge of the double garage. This means that I can install my crane hoist on the RSJ. The chassis has been positioned directly below it. The chassis has been propped up high so I can paint it but I need to find the right primer for the galvanising. I've had the tyres taken off the wheels so they can go for shot blasting. The spare looks dodgy with a lot of corrosion around the valve hole.

There's not much else to pull to bits apart from the engine. I haven't decided yet whether to do it myself or get a proper rebuild. I did rebuild my Series 3 engine.

Afternoon off and off to Yorkshire to collect bits. First to David Beaumont to collect the gearbox - it looks a lot cleaner than when I dropped it off. Then to Bradford to get some Dulux Metalshield Primer - it says it will stick to bright galvanised metal. Then to Triple S for the powder coated parts - almost unrecognisable from when I dropped them off

Wire brushing axles in the morning. They're now down to bare metal and ready for a coat of primer. In the afternoon we painted the chassis. The paint covered well and appears to stick.

Lots of wire brushing again today - swivel housings and springs. First coat of Hammerite No 1 Rust Beater on the chassis so it is gradually changing colour. You can see a coat of primer on one of the axles in the background.

The local hardware store had run out of black smooth Hammerite so I used some paint I had in the workshop which soon ran out after the axles had been painted. The flange won't get its top coat until it has been assembled - that way I won't get paint on the flange face and it will act as a bit of a seal.

Second top coat on the chassis. It will probably still need some patching up. Sprayed the spring shackle plates with primer. I also removed the bracket from the old chassis that holds the main brake valve. This has cleaned up nicely. Started wire brushing the rear differential - another disgusting job. The driving flange has got a bad groove where the pinion oil seal sits so I will have to get a new one - otherwise it's likely to leak.

Front axle in place marking the first time something has started to get assembled. The rear springs are knackered. One of them has a cracked spring plate. The other has a stuck bolt that doesn't want to come out. This spring looks a bit dodgy as something is forcing the plates apart - I suspect they are badly rusted. Both differentials are now clean and first coat of primer applied. All brake plates are now ready for cleaning but I need to be outside to do this and its rained today.

The trouble with this time of year is that there isn't much daylight. I managed to use the last of it to wire brush 2 of the rear brake back plates - these have now had a coat of primer. I then had to spend a lot of time cleaning up the studs at the bottom of the swivel housings. Someone had used a lot of loctite here. The bump stops were fitted to the chassis before I had to give in because of the cold. I've put some waxoyl in between the bump stops and the chassis in the hope it might deter too much grot getting in. I've managed to get a couple of runs on the differential flange which will need to be scraped off.
