Highslide JS Doesn't it look horrible?

The manifold, as expected, was a bit of a pig. The outer bolts had to have the heads taken off with the angle grinder as they had corroded so badly. One of the 'saddle' clamps bridging the inlet and exhaust manifold had a corroded bolt as well. My solution was to use a hacksaw blade to cut through the saddle clamp on both sides of the bolt. Very lengthy and very tedious but it did the job in the end. The silencer was knackered. Someone had welded a patch over it but a hole had blown out in a different place.

Steady progress yesterday and today. The upper bulkhead came off very easily yesterday. Without touching it, the radiator sprung a leak so it was probably on its last legs. I do particularly dislike dismantling, especially when nuts and bolts have been in place for years. It's much better when you start doing something positive.

In the near side wheel arch is this dogs dinner, a fair amount looking original. Utterly horrible and I shall try to do better than this. The tool box covered this up - the box itself is in good condition
Highslide JS The upper body sections weren't too difficult to get off. The major problem was getting the excess paint off. All of the body bolts engaged in keeper plates which aren't shown in the parts manual (I think).

Getting the seat base out can be straightforward (rarely) or dire. This one got pretty close to the dire end of the scale. The fasteners were dome top with a slot, covered in 34 years of paint. In the end I had to use the angle grinder to cut the tops off. Not easy as some were a bit recessed. I haven't found too much aluminium rot so far.

It's taken most of tonight but finally the left wing has relented and has come off. The nearside footwell box has lots of strange bits of steel in it covering up all sorts of holes - not very tidy at all. The separate steel mudshield plate was pretty rotten and has corroded quite a large amount of the ally section on the underside of the wing where it connects to. I'm probably going to need to get a new section welded in here. The rest of the wing looks like it is OK.
Highslide JS The main problem area was these 2 bolts that secure the back of the wing to the bulkhead. They are slotted, round headed bolts engaging into a captive square nut. All seized solid. I tried to follow the same system as the seat base but the screw heads had sunk slightly and there was no washer to keep them proud of the surface. The angle grinder couldn't get in enough. Eventually I decided to have a go at drilling them out - this eventually worked. For the right hand side, I'll grind the tops off - to make sure I hit the centre and will drill them out

The other wing finally succumbed. It wasn't helped by me breaking off a drill bit as I tried to drill out the bolts. I then got in with the angle grinder but didn't look very carefully at where the sparks were going. A burning smell alerted me to my overalls on fire. The fire went through the overalls, trousers and kegs - fortunately no damage done!

One area that did surprise me was the drop arm from the steering box. A lot of people seem to have trouble here getting the nut off. I got my 2 legged puller as tight as it would go and then heated up the drop arm with a blow torch. Once it was really hot, I started to hit it with the hammer. Big bang and it was off! The steering is a bit vague so it might need a refurbished box

Today's jobs including taking off all of the ancillary pieces from the engine. It definitely has some form of cylinder head gasket problem as the rocker box is full of a fawn scum. Then I tackled the propshafts which are always horrible to undo - Land Rovers are worse as you have 2 to take off. The front diff flange was the worst. Finally the gearbox came out - bit of a struggle as I missed the nut right at the bottom of the bell housing. The shed could do with being a foot higher to get a clean lift.
