I always like to fit an oil pressure gauge and an ammeter. Both give you more warning of something going wrong. I'm starting to work across the instrument area. The wiring plan has had to have a couple of revisions due to practical constraints

I use these termination boxes for the lights to avoid the dogs dinner that was seen during dismantling. There's a multiway spade connector block inside the box which means its simple to fix anything. I need to fit a reversing light still - it's a bit dark round here

A long time since an update! Basically I've been plodding away at the wiring and there's been a lot of crimping. Tonight, I fitted the oil temperature sensor after a debate about whether a copper washer was needed or not. The book part number washer for the sensor is too big and useless. I've used PTFE tape so we'll see if that seals it. Then it was time to fill the engine with oil, remove the spark plugs and turn it over. The oil pressure gauge didn't work and I found that I had wired it to earth rather than 12V.

Here's what's behind the instrument panel. Tonight I wired up the heater. The correct wire colours are used throughout.

I've taken the electrical filter box out of the heater because it's an ugly great lump. I don't see me fitting a radio so I don't need to worry about interference. With everything tightened up, the heater doesn't work so a wire must have come off somewhere. I need to drill a hole for the bottom heater mounting so it does need to come apart again.

Finally all of the brake pipes are in place. We have a bit of a mixture of imperial and metric. The master cylinder is metric whereas the brake shuttle valve is imperial so these pipes had to be modified. I'll need a bit of rubber pipe round these pipes as they are a bit close together.

Bonnet on for the first time. Starts to look a lot better. I fitted one of the windscreen glasses this weekend. Unfortunately, the rubber seal only does one window. So if you need to fit both glasses, make sure you order 2 seals! I've gone for the heated front windows so I've now got to work out where the wiring is going to go and still look neat.

Thanks to Nick for this one. While studying my website, Nick spotted that I had the wrong shock absorbers. These had been sold to me as for a lightweight but I was surprised that they were much thinner. I just thought they were modern replacements. No, the one on the left is for a standard Series 3 and the one on the right is a heavy duty one for a lightweight. The standard ones will need to go on ebay

The lightweight has a complicated set of door seals and someone had bodged the seal on the end of the vent panel. It was just pop riveted directly to the vent panel. I got the galvanised retainers earlier as a potential correct part but it was obvious that I was still missing something. I found a photo on another web site of parts going off for painting and could see a couple of potential parts. I sent off the photos to Blanchards and they were able to supply the brackets (at a cost!). Blanchards part numbers are 335498 and 335499 - the former is in the Lightweight parts book, the latter isn't. It looks a mirror image of the right part so I reckon its good. Now got to get them painted.

I have to admit that its taking me longer than I expected to finish things off. I think the main reason is that I'm having to do a lot of fettling - minor adjustments to make it all fit properly. Getting the excess galvanising off the tailgate locking pin posts for example. Anyway tonight I fitted the windscreen. To get the right angle, the hinge posts need to be with the shallow V downwards - as I found out when the windscreen was too far back an angle. I had to remove a bit off the throttle shaft as it was in danger of slowly grinding away at the main battery cable.
