Highslide JS 9 March

It's been a frustrating few weeks with no real progress - waiting for the painting. Parts are now starting to arrive. Friday saw the bulkhead roughly in place. At the moment, the rear is higher than the front as the springs aren't compressed enough so it was difficult to judge the correct rake. I thought it best to get one door on so that I could get the body in the right place. With a door lock fitted and the striker, I was able to confirm a growing suspicion that the chassis is a tad too short. The only way I could get the door lock lining up with the witness marks on the striker was to position the body outside of the rear body supports - see below.

Pedal boxes in without too much trouble and a start made on the accelerator linkage. I had thought that the cross shaft had had a military accident.Once all of the rust and muck was off you could see that it was designed to be bent. Bit of a struggle getting the "pre formed" clutch pipe to line up properly - lots of very gentle bending and trial & error required here.

Here you can see the dilemma. Normally the body sits within the rear tub supports on the cross member but the only way I can get the right fore and aft alignment is to do this - fit the body behind the supports. This is the way 90 Land Rovers are fitted but not Series Land Rovers. I had spotted the when I problem when I fitted the overdrive. When the transmission cover was fitted, the gear lever wasn't central within the square hole. I think the chassis is about 2 to 3mm too short.

Everything in for a trial fit. The cover that sits in between the bulkhead and the transmission cover is always a nightmare. This one needed a lot of "persuasion" to fit; even then there's a bit of a gap between it and the bulkhead. I do have this hatred of the standard nut plates; I might fit button head screws here instead of hex head.

It looks like 5mm engineering nylon sheet will give the right amount of shimming between the body and the chassis. It will also act as an insulator between the metals.

Not the best of photos but this is a piece of 5mm thick engineering nylon which its on the chassis outrigger. The aluminium body will be bolted down through this. I will also use stepped nylon washers to insulate any steel bolts from the nylon. A lot of muck from the wheel arch gets in here.

Slowish progress. Accelerator linkage being built up although I can't find the spacer that sits on the end of the accelerator shaft. Problems with brake pipes as the union on the forward end of the master cylinder doesn't have 3/8" or 7/16" union. I thought fitting the sills would be easy - no chance! I think the button head screws at the rear end will work. The body is bolted down now.

As the bulkhead was in place, I thought it was time to fit the speedo cable. Big mistake! The cable needs to be fitted before you fit the transmission brake, never mind the overdrive. So the overdrive had to come out together with the dipstick tube (you can see the brass top in the centre of the picture. Even then its a desperate job to fit the 3 screws - British engineering at its best!

Before I can fit the gearstick, I need to renew the bush at the end of the gearstick. The parts catalogue shows a gearstick with a round ball at the end with an O ring fitted in a groove round the equator. The end of this gearstick looks completely different; the rubber "bush" I removed looked like it had been carved up with a Stanley knife. I'll see if Craddocks know what should be used here.
