Highslide JS 29 January

Here's the old chassis before I cut it up

Having owned one Series 3, 2 300 TDis, 2 Td5s and 1 Td4, I reckon only the last one has the gearing right. All of the others are too low geared. For the Series 3, I fitted a Fairey Overdrive which made a big difference. You can't buy them new these days but Rocky Mountain Spares do one. So I thought about it for a while but then went out and bought one.

I have to say that it's a lovely bit of kit and a real pleasure to fit and handle. Someone has spent a lot of time designing it. First stage is to knock off the nut at the end of the output shaft and remove the final gear. Then you fit the new output gear. The kit even includes a deep 27mm socket to do up the new nut. Fortunately my rebuild engine was stiff enough (with the plugs in) to be able to torque up the nut correctly. The needle bearing assembly is the new part having been fitted.

Here it is with everything in place. Although similar to the Fairey Overdrive, it has a much higher quality feel to it.

The only slight concern is that the the pivot for the control handle seems to be very close to the seat base. I've got to cut a 2" hole in the gearbox tunnel. The instructions show the control lever to the outside of the pivot lever. I've routed it to the inside so that it's well clear of the tunnel cover. Maybe a lightweight foible?

With projects like this you sometimes hit plateaux when forward progress is limited. I had to a lot of paint stripping the previous week so that the body cappings could go off for galvanising.

Today was a big step forward as the first body parts came back from the paint shop. Most of it has gone into storage but the radiator panel could be fitted. Hanging it off the hoist like this really helps as normally you need 3 hands for this. I might need to make up a bit more packing for the bottom of the panel. Some minor filing was required to get some holes to align. Should get the rest of the bolts in tomorrow. The oil cooler has a couple of packing pieces that go between the top of the cooler and the radiator panel. Feeling a bit chuffed tonight!

Work has got in the way this week. Most of the body parts were down at the paint shop. It was good to see that John had made good progress on the tub in his paintshop. I also picked up the bodyside capping from the galvanisers

Picked up the freshly painted tub today. The afternoon was spent fitting the floor supports which isn't easy when you have to work upside down. 1 mm nylon sheet has been fitted wherever steel is adjacent to aluminium. I've fitted 5mm nylon shims between the support and the body but I don't think they're thick enough. I'll add more once I know the final position of the body

Not much progress to report but I think I've finally removed the last of the army green paint - I seem to have been wire brushing for months. Today I managed to fit the fan shroud. The old one was cracked probably due to someone forcing it into position. The only way to get it in was to undo the oil cooler bolts and the radiator panel bolts so that the whole lot could be move forwards. I found I needed to remove 1 inch of pipe off the lower radiator hose so that it didn't foul the oil cooler pipe.

The replacement bulkhead from Ashtree Landrover turned up today. Unfortunately it was raining so no photo. Down to the paint shop on Monday for painting. Once that's done I can start to make some progress again.
