Here's the clutch assembled ready for the cover to go on. Note the tie wrap stopping the kickstart moving outwards. If you're not careful then as you wrestle with the clutch, you can knock the starter pinion off its stop thus losing the spring tension. THe white blob is mastic sealing in a bolt. The ally lug that holds the end of the spring has broken off so there's a bolt doing the same job. The mastic seals it in.

Here's the next job which is to retime the ignition. The ignition comes from Kirby Rowbotham. A neat job, if a tad expensive. I found that the screw that holds the timing "cam" was too short so I used a 2BA screw instead.

Carb back on with a new clip holding the needle in place. I managed to break the previous one. The fuel banjo needs turning through 180 degs. I thought it was running rich last time so I put the clip in the top groove. It turned out that was far too weak.

Timing the ignition. What a waste of time! Mr Rowbothams instructions aren't very good. For a start, the instructions are for an Arial and I reckon that everything is the reverse - so for anti-clockwise you read clockwise. Now I've timed it twice now paying great care to the dial gauge set up and making sure everything is right. Each time it never works and I time it by pulling off the cam and moving it a bit. When it kicks back a bit too hard (just like my old Bantam) it's got to be about right.

So after studiously following the instructions for timing the ignition this is what you end up with - bump starting down the drive. In the end after one adjustment of the "cam", it started straightway and sounded good.

About to launch off on the first powered run - with 4 gears!

Completion! After 18 years in 2 attics and a chicken shed, the Bantam coughs into life. I reckon its a bit on the weak side. I might have to put a bigger jet in although I might try a bit more tweaking with the timing.
