Highslide JS I did deliberate on this one for a while. The air cleaner goes here on a D14 and rubber tube goes to the carb. I always used to hate removing the tube as it was so stiff. I haven't found anyone who can supply the element so I've decided to fit a pancake style filter. This allows me to put a proper distribution block and fuse block where the air filter used to go. The battery area on a Bantam was always a wiring mess so I'm hoping this will be a lot tidier.

A wet day, so a day on wiring. The purists amongst you will want to stop reading here! !960's wiring was always messy and I've got a particular hatred of bullet connectors. They either won't come apart or the wire comes out. So I've used modern components as they will be hidden away. Here's the headlamp shell. This is virtually complete apart from the earth wire on the speedo - which I haven't got yet. I've decided to provide earth wires everywhere to avoid problems with paint.

The last 2 days have been flyable so I've been out. Having sourced yet another B175 gudgeon pin, it turned out to be shorter than the one I'd previously fitted. So I've decided to stay with the previous one. I fitted the exhaust tonight which looks really good. I need to get a stainless clamp - Aidpac supplies some nice ones.

The rest of the night has been a bit frustrating. The choke lever cable is the wrong one as it's too long. Also, the throttle cable seems a bit short. I got a cable abutment for where the cable goes into the twistgrip. It needed to be filed out before I could get the cable in. Even with the adjuster fully wound in, there's no slack so I suspect it's wrong.

Next, I got a set of ball end handlebar levers to sort out the clutch lever problem - see photo on previous entry. These were sold as suitable for a Bantam but they have cable adjusters which the Bantam didn't have. Unfortunately, I can't get the cable in!

I'm now running out of things to do! A nice new air cleaner arrived from Surrey Cycles. It screwed on nicely to the carb intake. The speedo has been sent to Gaggs in Nottingham for refurbishment. It's a KPH speedo and will need converting.

I'm now trying to work out what I still need to buy - the list is getting shorter. I've totalled up how much I've spent so far - scary!

I need to get the seat out of the attic as I need to see if I can get the shock absorbers to work - they're a little stiff to say the least.

Highslide JS Bit of gap from the last one as I was away on holiday. Here's the last outside view with most of the frame bits complete. Now the long wait for the paintwork and inside for the winter.

Back from a trip down the M6 to Coventry to collect the tinware and what a stunning job it is! Here the back mudguard is fitted, the coil is on and the wiring fitted up. The box to the right of the battery is the electronic ignition.

Purists look the other way! I've fitted a hidden switch as the headlamp switches on the headlamp cowl are an open invitation to drain your battery.

I should have checked the front number plate (fitted on the front mudguard) before painting. It now won't go into the holes. I'd have to file them out a bit which would spoil the paintwork. Still, it's probably not a good thing to fit these days so I won't bother.
