Got the Solvol Autosol out for a polish on the side cover. I don't think I'm going to go for a highly polished cover. I also fitted the steering head cups and bearings. I can't fit the top yoke yet as its still at the painters. |

Final trip to Bingley and Triple S for the last parts for painting. I fitted the top yoke, fork cowl and headlamp bowl. There's now a natty chrome ring backing the headlamp bowl. It took some persuading to adopt the right shape. I also fitted the rack and had the usual nightmare in trying to get all of the fittings to line up decently.
The original engine was damaged by water corrosion and I got a B175 engine in a box of bits from an ebay sale. So the engine will be a mixture of B175 and D14 bits - most of it doesn't matter. Today I found out where it does matter. The barrel came back from the painters looking very nice. I found that the gudgeon pin was missing from the B175 piston so I thought I would use one from the D14. Wrong! The D14 pin is too short so I shall have to order one. Bits to finish off the front forks are also on order. |

A tale of woe! 2 new fork oil seal holders arrived from C & D Autos. The old ones had lost large amounts of chrome - however, they had unscrewed easily from the fork leg. The old circlips were extracted without 2 much difficulty. New oil seals were pressed into the holders using a vice and a socket of the right diameter. The first holder was fitted to the fork leg without much difficulty using a C spanner that was just the right size. The problem came with the second holder where it screwed down about 5 turns and refused to go any further. You can see in the photo that thread is still showing - on the other leg the holder covers all of the screwed portion. I swapped the holders over with no effect - there's some mismatch between this fork leg and the holders. The thread looks clean.
I also checked the alternator stator for the correct 8 thou gap - it needed a slight adjustment. Tyres are on order from C.Wylde & Son Ltd in Leeds. Although they are made in Taiwan, the name isn't as bad as the offerings from Central Wheel. Why can't we make things any more?
I've started to strip down the carburettor. There's a lot of brown gunge here and its going to need a good clean. |

My laptop has failed with a video card fault - hence the lack of updates. This is when you find the next business day repair service contract that you purchased from Toshiba isn't!
Having got some replacement oil seal holders, I found these have the same problem as the previous ones - they won't go on. So it's back to the best of the old ones. They don't protrude very much from the cowl so it's not a big problem. As you can see, the fork legs are now in place. Fortunately, I bought some box spanners years ago and they will get to the spring nuts in the fork cap nuts. I didn't need the special service tool as the fork tubes went in nicely.
The handlebars and headlamp rim are a temporary fit as they're both too badly rusted. Both suspension dampers are on at the back. Not a brilliant job of a respray but it will do. There should be enough paint of them to stop them rusting!
Central Wheels phoned yesterday to say the wheels are ready so we should be back on 2 wheels before too long. |

I ordered a carb major repair kit at the weekend. The web site was pretty good and asked for the sizes for the pilot jet, needle jet and main jet. It was a bit of a surprise when the kit arrived to find no jets! Second problem day in a row as yesterday I received some Triumph ignition and light switches instead of the Bantam ones I had ordered. Hopefully the right bits will arrive shortly.
I've fitted the bits I can to the carb - the rest will need to wait until the jets arrive. Lightning Spares do a stainless screw set to replace the rusty screws.
I've decided to go for a 12V Powerbox from Boyer Bransden which I've ordered today. I'll make up a custom loom and get the bits from Vehicle Wiring Products. |

The jets for the carb have arrived so they have been fitted. C & D Autos think they have a gudgeon pin for the B175 engine; I've checked the length of the D14 one and it's shorter.
The wheels arrived from Central Wheels on Friday. So the tyres were fitted with a bit of straining, the brake plates made up and the wheels fitted to the frame. So for the first time for 17 years, I can move the bike around on its own wheels. I do need to do a bit of fine tuning on the rack which is drooping a bit.
My brother in law is making me some stainless spacers that go between the frame and the side panels. |

The gudgeon pin arrived from C & D Autos. As the engine is a B175, the pin differs from being longer than the D14. The pin from the latter is 51.5mm and they supplied one at 53.75mm. It still doesn't butt up against the circlips so I'm still not sure it's the correct one.
As you can see, the barrel has gone on but I haven't tightened it down yet. I'm still thinking about the head. This one isn't from a B175 as that had a central spark plug - but it did come in the box of bits. |

Spot the botch!
Another delivery today including handlebars from Bournemouth Bantams. I'm keen to keep the original combined throttle and front brake lever. It's polished up OK; however when I came to fit the clutch lever it was obvious that one of the previous owners had replaced the original with something else. You can see how the lever is too big for the handlebar clamp. |

It's slow going at the moment. The limiting factor is the tinware painting which I'm not going to see for a while. So there's no reason to hurry that much. Still progress continues.
- My brother in law has turned some nice stainless spacers for the side panels - much better than the manky old ones.
- I've completed the first draft of the new 12V, negative earth wiring diagrams. The bits have been ordered - the problem is going to be fitting the bits in!
- The front brake is a problem as I can't get enough free play to fit the cable. The new one is identical to the old one so it should go. I'm going to try to swap the brake cams. They're supposed to be exactly the same part number but its worth a try.
A lovely new exhaust system arrived from Armours today. Unfortunately I've now found the limitation of buying a box of bits off ebay. It was sold to me as a B175 and the engine casings are definitely B175. However, if you look at the barrel in the photo 2 below, you will see that the exhaust outlet is quite small. The D10 and below had a 1 3/8" bore whereas the D14 had a 1 3/4" bore. So you can see that the barrel is definitely not from a B175. Also the head is wrong as it should have a central spark plug. It looks like I will have to go back to the original D14 barrel and get it painted.
When I got home, I dug out the D14 barrel and found that the internal bore was the same as the "B175" barrel but it had what looked like a ring screwed onto the exhaust stub. Obviously BSA had "sexed up" the D14 by fitting a bigger bore exhaust! Together with a blowtorch, I managed to persuade the adapter ring to come off and its now fitted to the refurbished barrel. Result - happiness!
The front brake cable problem was solved by swapping the front and rear brake cams. The part numbers are identical so they should have been identical. However, it looks like the angle is different as the brake lever fitted correctly. It's a bit stiff at the moment and won't release properly but I guess I can solve that.
Pictures will come later - I'm having problems with the SD card reader. |

My brother in law turned up these nice spacers to hold the side panel back panels away from the frame. Much nicer than the originals. |
